If you follow along on Instagram, chances are that you know I love a good face mask. I like to share my skincare addiction through Instagram stories and today I’m sharing the best face masks for oily skin. I’ve broken this down into three categories: sheet masks, traditional masks, and masks that were a flop for me.

Best Face Masks for Oily Skin | About My Skin
Before I give you a break down of the masks I use, let me tell you about my skin. Best described as oily-combination, I suffer from hormonal breakouts around my cycle. My acne has calmed down A TON from my teen years, but I still deal with scarring. When it comes to skincare, I look for products that will help tamp down oil, speed up skin turnover, and help brighten the skin to get rid of scarring.
Anyone else obsessed with #facemasks? Here are the best masks for oily skin! #beautytips Click To TweetBest Face Masks for Oily Skin | Sheet Masks
- Patchology SMARTMUD No Mess Mud Mask*, $30/4 masks
This mask is the Hannah Montana of this list — truly the best of both worlds. If you love mud masks but hate the messiness, this mask is for you. Get ready to feel refreshed after peeling the backing of each side & then allow the mask to sit for 25 minutes. This mask tames my skin when it’s oily and leaves the skin feeling soft. While this pack of masks is more than I usually spend at $7.50/mask, I like using these when my skin starts to produce too much oil.
Love mud masks, but hate the mess? I have just the mask for you: Click To TweetWhen I snagged this mask at Target, I immediately wondered how bubbly it would be. At $4, I wasn’t expecting much and let me tell you, I was in for a surprise. Leave this mask on for 20-30 minutes and prepare yourself to have a layer of bubbles that just. keep. growing. This mask leaves lots of residue on your skin which isn’t my fave. However the next morning, my skin was so smooth. This mask helps with stopping zits in the early stage. BONUS: This brand is usually buy 3, get 1 free at Target.
Peel off masks have been incredibly trendy lately. The trick with this one is to make sure your hair is up and out of the way and to be careful when applying around your eyebrows. I find myself reaching for this mask when I’m looking to get rid of dead skin or speed up the turn over process of my skin due to scarring.
Best Face Masks for Oily Skin | Traditional Masks
- LUSH Cupcake Fresh Mask, $9.95, available in stores only
I haven’t used this mask in awhile, mainly because my local LUSH is under construction. This line of masks from LUSH are all fresh made and must be kept refrigerated. This particular blend features chocolate, spearmint, and vanilla so it smells delicious too. Like most traditional masks, rinsing the mask off can get messy but immediately leaves my skin feeling refreshed.
With charcoal and walnut shell, this mask exfoliates while tamping down oil — just what my skin needs when I get close to my cycle! Whenever my skin starts to act up, I tend to buy ALL the masks. During one Ulta trip dedicated to just this, I threw this charcoal mask in my basket. I had super low expectations, but would highly recommend this mask.
- LUSH Mask of Magnaminty, $28.95
I was so glad when LUSH came out with this mask in the self-preserving formula. The fresh face masks work so well for me, but with a two week shelf life they aren’t always cost efficient. Introducing, Mask of Magnaminty. With clay to help with oil and honey to help moisturize the mask softens skin and smells phenomenal with its peppermint oil.
Best Face Masks for Oily Skin | Not For Me
And of course there were some busts — here’s three masks that just didn’t work on my oily skin:
- TULA Exfoliating Treatment Mask*, $54 — I like a deep exfoliation and this is a very light exfoliating mask that would be great for those with sensitive or dry skin.
- Ulta Brightening Citrus Skin Energizing Sheet Mask, $3 — I picked up this mask hoping it would help with the dark spots that come along with scarring. The mask is lightweight and smells great — I love citrus — but didn’t do much for my skin in terms of eliminating oil or helping with skin turnover.
- LUSH Catastrophe Cosmetic, available in stores only, $9.95 — This mask really works best on sensitive skin. While not a complete bust, I typically woke up the next day with soft, smooth skin, I didn’t see the results I aim for with masks.
