I get a lot of questions about what working from home is like, how I manage my time as a blogger, etc. If you joined my Instagram Live last week, you may have caught a couple of the misconceptions that Tomi and I discussed but I wanted to talk a little more in depth about the amount of work that goes into a blog plus what a day of blogging looks like for me.
What a Day of Blogging Looks Like + Biggest Misconceptions About Bloggers Click To TweetBTW, if you missed the big news on Facebook or Instagram over the weekend; I’m in the March issue of Southern Living! I’m so excited to have a three-page feature in the magazine where I started What Nicole Wore, why I continue to blog, the importance of encouraging women as well as some of my fashion and beauty favorites. The issue is on newsstands now & you can also check out the article here!

What a Day of Blogging Looks Like + Biggest Misconceptions | Starting Off the Day
I always start my days off by checking email as well as social media. This allows me to quickly see if there’s anything pressing that I need to respond to. Usually, I have a couple emails from brands, other bloggers, or public relations contacts that I need to respond to.

After getting through that, I try and catch up on my social media engagement. This entails checking Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook and responding to comments where appropriate. I usually have Instagram direct messages to answer and also will post to my Instagram story. Lately, I’ve been knocking this part of my day out over a piece of cinnamon raisin toast and a cup of tea. I mentioned this in last week’s Friday Favorites but I help run a private Facebook group for bloggers in Kentucky; on my days of acting as a moderator, I’ll also put up a prompt to start conversation and engage with the group!

What a Day of Blogging Looks Like + Biggest Misconceptions | Errands & Shoots
Running errands or going out for a photoshoot isn’t a daily task for me; I’ve worked hard to implement a system where I only do this a day or two a week just to be more efficient. If it’s shoot day, I’ll pack up my car with all of my clothes and accessories. The night before {or sometimes morning of} a shoot, I’ll go through each outfit and list out what the full look includes. If there are any specific types of shots I need of specific items or products, I’ll make note of that too. This means deciding what accessories, shoes, and jewelry to pair with an outfit and then steaming all pieces of clothing to get rid of any wrinkles.

Errand days can be a little more hectic. These days can range from needing to pick up product for a campaign, completing returns for clothing pieces that don’t work, meetings, photoshoots for other publications, etc. Sometimes these can be a fixed time, which means making adjustments to my routine, other times I’m able to fit these in around my schedule.

Midafternoon means climbing back into my email; I’ll use this time to pitch collaborations to brands, pick out product from brands I’m currently working with, report statistics on live partnerships and more! Usually around this time, I’m ready for a snooze and will take a short nap. {Major perk of working for yourself.}

Once I’ve finished my nap, I’ll grab a snack and dig back into social media. This can be promoting a blog post that just went live, scheduling out social media for the week, responding to comments, engaging with other bloggers or followers, and sharing new posts.
What a Day of Blogging Looks Like + Biggest Misconceptions | Blog Content
I’ve always been an early dinner kind of gal – you can count on me eating dinner before 6 on most nights. After dinner, I may take an hour or two to catch up with my family and then it’s back to the grind. For whatever reason, I prefer to write and edit at night.

Normally, I’ll edit all photos from a shoot at once so that means selecting and uploading the photos for a post and then sitting down and writing content. This admittedly has changed a lot for me over the past year. While there are still parts of my life that I prefer to keep offline, I have tried to better incorporate my voice into the writing I do for this space. So what does that mean? Well for starters, the writing process can be a lot longer than it was in the past. While there are still are posts where you’ll hear about my latest style picks or beauty products I love, I’m constantly trying to bring content is more thoughtful and hopefully relatable on your end.
What a Day of Blogging Looks Like + Biggest Misconceptions | The Biggest Misconceptions About Blogging
And now for some laughs and some general knowledge too: here are the biggest misconceptions I hear about blogging!
- Blogging’s really easy; anyone could do it! // It’s 100% true that anyone can start a blog, but being constant, creating a community that readers will come back to, quality content, and ultimately being successful is a lot harder than it may seem.
- You just sit around in your PJs all day // I actually talked about this with Heather when we met up for coffee last week. Full transparency, on my office days with no shoots, meetings, or leaving the house, I will stay in loungewear. However, that’s not every single day and there are weeks when I get dressed every single day just like any traditional job.
- Bloggers get TONS of free stuff! // Many of us receive samples, new product releases, invites to special events and more. While this is definitely a cool perk of the job, it still is work. Trying a new skincare product to review can lead to a breakout, a free event can mean being attached to your phone or camera to properly document the event, press trips require getting up early to location scout before crowds arrive, and of course there’s always the products that just don’t work and giving that feedback to a brand or marketing firm.
- You set your own schedule! // I absolutely do! However, there are lots of bloggers that maintain a job, school, etc. on top of blogging. Regardless of this, blogging usually means late nights and/or early mornings, sacrificing time on the weekends to work.
What a Day of Blogging Looks Like + Biggest Misconceptions | Accordion Bell Sleeves & White Jeans for Spring
I actually talked about this a bit on Instagram, while I love bell sleeves I’m always worried about dragging them through my dinner. I deemed this pastel aqua blouse worth the risk when I saw the layered, accordion bell sleeves. Pink Blush has it on sale right now in this color as well as blush, so be sure to snag one if you want to twin! The fabric does wrinkle if not hung up but can be quickly steamed or thrown in the dryer for a couple minutes.

I wore this out for one of the first warmer days we had with no rain and in the spirit of embracing all things spring went with a spring inspired color combination. The blush jewelry and accessories perfectly complement the light mint top and stand out without being too loud. Is blush and mint a color combination that you’d try?

I loved reading this post. Blogging is hard work and long hours. There are so many things you need to be good at to make it work. Thanks for addressing some of the misconceptions out there x

This was so fascinating to read! I’ve been blogging for several years now, just as a hobby, so I know just how much work can go into it even when it’s NOT your full time job. However, I can imagine that if your blog is your job there are so many added items that have to get done and more pressure on you to create content. For anyone who thinks blogging is easy they should read this post! By the way, I love the pretty sleeves on that top–I’d have trouble keeping them clean too I’m afraid 🙂
Michele Morin says
I would definitely drag those sleeves through my dinner (or someone else’s!), but they’re beautiful on you. And I agree that most non-bloggers have no idea what it involves.
Sarah Caton says
Love your list of misconceptions! Definitely all resonate with me. XO

Congratulations on your feature and I liked reading this post! Scheduling looks so different from each blogger but one thing is common there’s a schedule! Blogging can really lead you into trouble if time management isn’t your thing. I am now realizing that and seeing how I make use of the time but again it all comes to personal, choice, attitude and what your goals are for your blog. Happy Tuesday!

There are so many misconceptions about blogging and I’m glad that a lot of us bloggers are trying to share more of the truth behind blogging! Sure there are some amazing perks, but for me, this IS my job and I treat it as one! It’s a lot of hard work and dedication, but I love it so much!

You are Springing forward in this outfit, pretty Nicole. That pastel mint top is gorgeous – those sleeves! I also love all the light pink jewelry you chose, perfect for this pretty Spring outfit. Your smile is beaming too!

I love the myth bust on the free stuff! I don’t think people understand how many strings come with free stuff and how much WORK it can be! It’s almost more work than paid content because expectations are never clear and you end up dealing with people’s egos!
Kristin says
I love reading about this topic because you’re right, there are so many misconceptions about blogging! I think people forget about the non-glamorous side of blogging…the emailing, social media scheduling, and hard work behind the pretty photos and content! Great post, girl!

thanks for sharing this!! it’s so enlightening for those who do this full time, i feel like if i were to blog full time i wouldn’t feel like i have a lot of blogging related things to do haha but maybe it’s because i’m not fully utilizing my blog 🙂

You do so much in just one day! I’m blogging just as a hobby so I have no idea how it is when it’s your full-time job. I get how much works it requires and absolutely hate when people don’t acknowledge it.

Running a successful blog really is a full time job! I have four kids who I homeschool as well (and recently lost most of my meager as it was help- went from 4-8 hours of help a week to a couple hours occasionally!!). I love it though. Your schedule sounds pretty similar to mine!! <3 Jamie

What a great post! So so true. There are so many misconceptions to blogging- the biggest that it’s easy and you lay around just checking your social media. There is so much more to blogging, if it’s your full-time job and it can be fun and amazing but we don’t sit around playing on social media all day. Lol. Thanks for sharing this!

Congrats on the spread!! My sister in law has a subscription I’ll have to grab that issue from her : ) that day sounds about right, I have a full time job but when I do blog days/weekends that sounds a lot like what I do!
