Mint Julep Month and the Derby Drink I Like Better | What’s in a Mint Julep?
My first time at Churchill Downs was when I was 21 and my parents took me so I could have the full ~experience. AKA not the infield. While there I made a point to try two different cocktails. The first was the Lily. Lily is the official drink of Kentucky Oaks day and is made of vodka, sweet and sour mix, cranberry juice and a splash of triple sec. The other drink I was sure to try was a mint julep. Mint Juleps are the official drink of the Kentucky Derby and are comprised of bourbon, simple syrup, mint, and water.

I joke a lot that you can tell I’m not a native Kentuckian because I’m not a huge fan of bourbon. And while I’ve now had a number of bourbon cocktails that I like, I have to report back that the mint julep is not one of them. But never fear, if you’re not a bourbon person the Lily is a GREAT option and I’m about to share the recipe for one of my favorite cocktails.

Last week I went to the Kentucky Derby Fashion Show and the cocktail they had was the Bluegrass Belle. Jeptha Creed is the official vodka of the KY Derby Festival and the drink is delicious. I’ve linked to the recipe, but it was so good that I went out the next day to hunt down some of their Blueberry Vodka. If mint is a flavor that you’re adamantly against in cocktails, just use normal simple syrup instead of mint syrup. (Although give it a chance with the mint because YUM.)

Okay — onto the outfit. Haley & the Hound reached out to me last month and invited me to look at their newest arrivals. Almost immediately, I spotted this sweater and knew I had to have it. I mean nothing says Kentucky Derby like a mint julep. The top of the mint julep features some iridescent sequins reminiscent of the powered sugar that’s sprinkled over juleps.

For a fun casual look, I’m wearing it with distressed, black skinny jeans and a jean jacket. Louisville’s been back and forth with the weather lately so I’ve been breaking out light jackets like this one. It’s no secret that I love gingham so I snatched up these gingham block heels last fall when I saw them on clearance. Several people complimented me on them while I was shooting this look but even better, they’re super comfortable to walk in.
