How to Make a Blackberry Bourbon Smash for Kentucky Derby | The Recipe
This drink is pretty simple to make! Here’s what you’ll need:
- fresh blackberries
- fresh mint
- Bourbon (I used Woodford Reserve here!)
- Ice
- Optional: simple syrup
Start off by adding five fresh blackberries and four fresh mint leaves to the bottom of a glass. Muddle this mixture and then add 1-2 ounces of bourbon. Fill glass with ginger ale and add simple syrup to taste. Garnish with mint and blackberries and enjoy!

About the Drink
Bourbon is a strong spirit and so I like that you can really customize to the palette of each drinker. If you like your drinks to be less alcohol and more fruity, cut the liquor to 1 ounce (or even half an ounce) to allow the flavor of the mint and blackberries to really shine through.
If you’re on the other end of the spectrum and -love- being able to taste the bourbon, go for one and half or two ounces of bourbon and skip the simple syrup.
Living in Kentucky helped me develop an appreciation for bourbon but I like that this can be doctored to please even the pickiest drinkers. (Know someone that wants a mocktail? Simply skip the bourbon for a refreshing drink!)
