It’s hard to believe we are halfway through the year and have been living under pandemic restrictions for four months now. With so much about coronavirus still being unknown, I’ve leaned towards being more cautious. I wear a mask when I’m inside stores or can’t maintain distance from others in outdoor spaces, have mostly avoided gatherings with those I don’t live with, and plan to continue doing so.

For me personally, it’s been mentally and emotionally challenging. I’ve felt jealous of those that appear to not worry about their own health and the health of their loved ones. While deep down I know that everyone is going to have different comfort levels it’s been frustrating to have friends that don’t respect my personal boundaries. My not being comfortable going to a bar, large social gathering, or event without masks should be respected and not mocked. In some ways, it feels like living through this unprecedented time will undoubtedly change my opinions of others. {In some ways this doesn’t feel new. We’re living in VERY unprecedented times so my views on others have been altered immensely by their statements around the current administration, Black Lives Matter, and more.}

There was a meme about how preventing the spread of COVID-19 is similar to a group project in that we’ll all fail if everyone doesn’t do their part and more and more it’s starting to feel true.

I don’t personally want to get coronavirus; I have a severe Vitamin D deficiency which means I’m higher risk and twice as likely to deal with major complications if I contract the disease. Vitamin D deficiency is fairly common {around 40% of the US population} but notably higher in African American and Latinx people {around 75%}. I also worry a lot about my parents; both are high risk due to underlying medical conditions. While a large part of my precautions is tied to selfish interests {myself, my family}, I also know I would struggle emotionally if I were to infect someone else. Which I guess again is, in its own way selfish.

For me, wearing a mask seems like a very minor inconvenience if it means protecting someone else. It’s a very minuscule burden compared to what I imagine the emotional one would be if I were to be an asymptomatic carrier. Empath here meaning guilt is a big player in my emotional spectrum. While this season has included a lot of weighing guilt over protecting myself against guilt in missing out/general FOMO, I -think- I’m mostly at peace with understanding I have to go with my gut over trying to please others. Like I mentioned earlier, we’re all going to have different comfort levels and accepting that is our new way of life.

Kentucky started a mask mandate this past weekend and so it felt appropriate to share my homemade mask as well as round up some of my favorites that are available for purchase. Since we don’t know how long this may last & I know I’ll have to go out, I’ve been trying to up my mask collection. One of the keys to a great outfit is fun accessories after all. Happy Monday!

I’m pro-mask! I have high risk family members, so masks are very important to me. I would like to get a few more cute, reusable ones, such as the lemon or pineapple ones you share here. Also, loving your outfit and makeup here.

I totally get where you’re coming from. My husband is high risk, and it seems at times that even our close family members don’t understand why we can’t get together right now.

I love your mask Nicole! And yes to wearing one! Often, wearing a mask and seeing others going about your day can often make me doubt myself and almost feel like I’m being gaslighted. It sucks, because like you, I also get the feeling of not wanting to wear one and just go about my day pre-covid style, but I have to remember that it’s not just to protect myself, but mostly, others who are at high-risk for complications if they get it.
