One of my favorite packages each month is my BoxyCharm! I keep an eye out on Instagram for spoilers of what to expect and was very excited when I heard that the January BoxyCharm would include a Tarte eyeshadow palette. This month’s box ended up not being one that I loved but is probably exciting for lots of beauty lovers; keep reading for a rundown of what’s inside, a chance to win all of the goodies, plus why I’m not 100% obsessed this month.

Why I Didn’t Love the January BoxyCharm + Giveaway | My Former Love
Ok grab your coffee because this one’s a long story. I used to love Tarte. Being multiracial, it can be incredibly hard for me to find a foundation that is a good match for my skin. It’s very rare that I’ll buy a new foundation online because I try to go and get matched in person. A few years back, I had a great experience with a Tarte makeup artist in ULTA here in Louisville and stayed loyal to the foundation but also purchased quite a few Tarte products.

Why I Didn’t Love the January BoxyCharm + Giveaway | The Shape Tape Foundation Debacle
Fast forward to last year and Tarte is launching their Shape Tape Foundation. They launched with 15 shades and only three were for women of color. In my opinion, they botched the launch. While they came out after there was backlash and apologized, the “we’ll get to you later” attitude when it came to darker shades was off-putting to me & made it easy for me to say, “I’ll spend my money with more inclusive brands.” That being said: I do really like the Tarte products that I already had so I was pretty excited to try out one of their eyeshadow palettes.
Why I Didn’t Love the January BoxyCharm + Giveaway | Rainforest of the Sea Palette
Starting with the pros, this palette has GORGEOUS packaging. I love the mermaid/peacock feathers look and it’s a very compact palette making it an option for traveling. Upon doing some reading, I found that they created this palette hoping to market it to beauty newbies & lazy girls everywhere. These shadows are meant to be applied with a finger instead of a traditional brush. And while the swatches are pretty {see them here}, the shades seem like they may look a bit…chalky? on my skin tone. {Also add in the fact that I own about 20 different palettes.}

Why I Didn’t Love the January BoxyCharm + Giveaway | What Else Was Inside?
The box also features an eyeliner pencil from Starlooks, 2 Tatcha sheet masks, a Smith & Cult lip color, and a leave in hair mask. One thing I wish BoxyCharm would stop doing is including eyeliner pencils. I’ve tried in my 7 months and immediately tossed it because it was so rough on my waterline. The eyeliner brands tend to be brands I haven’t heard of before and the quality isn’t always great. {If you’re looking for great eyeliner pencils, I can’t say enough good things about these ones from Urban Decay! They apply so smoothly, feel like butter, AND come in a ton of colors.}
I’ve heard great things about Tatcha products so I did pull one sheet mask out of the box to try out.
