I’m writing this post from my hotel room in Northern Virginia and am halfway {kind of} through my move! Moving can be stressful so I wanted to share a few things I did that helped me minimize stress during my out of state move.

How I Calmed My Nerves During My Move | Write Things Down
I used to take a lot of pride in how great my memory was but it seems like those days are behind me. Using a planner, to do list, and/or notepad is crucial to making sure I don’t forget things especially when I have a lot on my mind. I use a weekly planning notepad as well as a monthly planner and they helped me keep track of everything from what day the movers were showing up, when I would be driving, which day to take the trash and/or recycle out, etc.

When I don’t write things down, I feel very scattered and it’s very hit or miss if I’ll remember something I need to.
How I Calmed My Nerves During My Move | Openly Communicate & Set Expectations
Since I work for myself I didn’t have to worry about informing a boss or coworkers but for my volunteer position, I made sure to let supervisors and other volunteers I work with know that I would be out of office. And then I followed through by setting up an out of office message and only briefly checking my email each day. Highly suggest setting up an out of office message that includes who to contact for XYZ needs.

For the most part everyone was respectful and receptive to my need for time away & the few times I was asked about something, I gently reminded that I was unavailable and asked if they were able to have someone else assist. Obviously, people can’t read minds or guess the unknown so letting people know that you’ll be away from your computer and only accessible in a true emergency is a good idea.
How I Calmed My Nerves During My Move | Make Time for Non Stressful Activities
A few times I caught myself starting to get overwhelmed or overstimulated {there’s a lot of noise that comes with moving} so finding ways to still take time for myself was really important. I actually ended picking up a coloring book as this activity requires enough concentration to keep the mind occupied while still being enjoyable. While I’d downloaded a bunch of books to read, I found that my head was too scattered for me to lock in enough to enjoy reading. Another thing I did that really helped was practicing this grounding technique that was recommended to me in therapy.
How I Calmed My Nerves During My Move | Create a Plan Well in Advance
While it’s not always an option, one of my keys to dealing with change is allowing myself the time to accept it. Because I’d known I was moving for awhile, I think I had gotten used to the idea that I’d be dealing with chaos and things out of my own control. Knowing that made the entire process much easier. It also helped that I’d made a plan of what work needed to be completed before leaving Louisville and what work I realistically planned to do during the moving period.
How I Calmed My Nerves During My Move | What I’m Wearing
If you’re wondering what one packs for two weeks holed up in a hotel, it’s a lot of basics that you can mix and match. I packed a lot of my favorite basic tees, Nike shorts, and some maxi skirts in my carryon and this weekender bag.

Your hotel looks extremely similar to the one I stayed in a few weeks ago! While I’m not moving, I totally agree with a planner/notes for everyday life. I’ve been reading over the past few months which is helpful too.
