This year, I’ve learned to celebrate every time I get the chance so I’m excited to share some happy news: I accepted a new job! As I’ve shared before this time last year, I started thinking about moving from Louisville to the DC suburbs but I also started to seriously think about if I wanted to continue freelancing full time. Ultimately, I decided to make the move and follow my family to Northern Virginia & started browsing for a new job.

Of course, when I sat down in January and wrote down my goals, I didn’t predict how different this year would look from any I’d experienced before.

Happy News: I Accepted a New Job | A Job Searching Tip
While I spent a lot of time job browsing, I’d say I actively started applying and truly job hunting towards the end of August. Searching for a job can be a discouraging process, but I tried to keep in mind that each “no,” meant that I was closer to a “yes.” {Sidenote: not always the easiest thing to remember in the moment!}

I’ll also say that searching for a job can feel like a full time job in itself so breaking things down is the way to go. I found that designating a certain day of the week to submit applications and setting up a certain time of day to browse and bookmark job listing emails and websites made the process less overwhelming.
Happy News: I Accepted a New Job | Leverage the Experience You Have
Refreshing your resume is something we should be doing regularly to update with both personal and professional accomplishments, volunteer experience, updated job duties, etc. For me, listing my blog made sense as I’m going to be working in an SEO related job. My experience as a blogger has provided me with my search engine optimization experience and so I was able to reference that both on my resume and in the interview process.

Another thing to look at is how any volunteer roles you may have relate to your field or desired field! I’ve mentioned before that I volunteer for my sorority, but my specific role is a public relations coordinator. I was able to leverage this to talk about communicating between different volunteer teams in our structure, mentoring and coaching others, as well as more role-specific things like website and social media audits.
Finally, this tip may seem like common sense but…check your background before doing Zoom interviews. Make sure to set yourself up somewhere that is clean, professional looking, and with good lighting if you don’t have a home office. {I purchased this ring light specifically for Zoom interviews; it’s been great for Zoom meetings, FaceTime dates, and social media too.}
Happy News: I Accepted a New Job | About the Outfit
I’ve been pretty conservative with my spending but treated myself with a trip to J.Crew Factory a few weeks ago. Fall is hands down my favorite season fashion-wise and they had SO many great pieces. This sweater ended up being one of the things I purchased. Let me start by saying: it is INCREDIBLY soft, not itchy at all, and one of those clothing staples that’s just really comfortable and easy to style hundreds of different ways. They have a colorblock version of the sweater that I’m debating ordering in the same soft yarn. {If we’re being honest, I could easily see buying this sweater in a few more colors.}

While the XS fit, I ended up with the small so I could layer it over my chambray button up shirts, oxfords {like I did here}, and even a fun plaid button up for the holidays.
Neutral eyeshadow is pretty much my go to on the occasions that I do put makeup on, but I wanted to do something different. The Born to Run palette is one of my favorites because of its mix of neutral, everyday shades as well as bold and colorful hues all at $49. Wanderlust and Big Sky were the perfect shades to create a green eyeshadow look.
Finally, as this is the last blog post I’ll have up before the election: don’t forget to vote if you haven’t already!
