Question of the day: when do you start decorating for Christmas? I’ve always been an after Thanksgiving person, but last week I threw an ornament painting party and now I want to put up my tree! Crafting has always been something I enjoy, but in full honesty I haven’t done a ton of it the past few years. Last month, my friend Emily invited Lindsay and I over for a girls’ craft night & it was so fun that I wanted to have another one!

Get in the Holiday Spirit & Throw an Ornament Painting Party | What You Need for This Craft Night
Getting ready for an ornament painting party actually is pretty easy! Here’s a list of what you’ll need:
- acrylic paint {I ordered this set of 60 colors off of Amazon for $25. The price has gone up since then but you can buy a more affordable paint set here or buy individual bottles if you know what colors you want!}
- glass ornaments, but you can do plastic too. Dollar Tree has both listed online, but didn’t have them out yet when I stopped by. I bought two different sizes for ~variety.
- paint brushes // I used this set to paint my ornaments, but also picked these up.

You’ll want to cover up your painting area with newspaper or a plastic tablecloth and keep paint from getting everywhere by putting them on paint palettes or paper plates.

I love a good brushstroke and knew that was what I wanted to try for my ornaments. It was easy for me, just dip your brush into the paint and give it a quick swipe against the ornament. If you want to put these on a themed tree, you’ll want to be strategic about which colors you use. I hadn’t fully decided when we were painting so I went with black, white, gold, and then added a color outside of that. While my ornament set is a tad mismatched, I fully intend to put them on my tree anyways.

Last week I had planned on buying this flocked tree, but I ended up snagging a natural tree at a great price so….maybe next year? One last pro tip: wear something you don’t mind getting paint on. AKA not your cashmere sweater. I went with a basic tee and jeans the night of!
Get in the Holiday Spirit & Throw an Ornament Painting Party | Why to Have Craft Nights
Aside from being good old fashioned fun, craft nights are a great way to get together with friends and slip away from technology. While putting my phone away when I meet up with friends for a meal or coffee is something I’ve gotten much better at, I still usually do end up checking my phone or pulling it out to show them something.
Holiday craft parties are also the perfect time to show off your holiday playlist. {Planning to share mine on the blog this year and I don’t think anyone is emotionally prepared for how great it is, to be completely honest!}

How did you set them down to dry in a way that kept the paint from smudging? Such a cute idea!

Thanks Lexi! I put them on ornament hooks after each was done being painted and then hung them individually on different door handles. I had read online to try hanging them on a wire hanger but it’s hard to keep them from bumping into each other and smudging that way.
