Summer has (unofficially) started and I’m kicking it off with this colorful maxi dress. It’s already heating up here in Washington DC which means I’m all in on lightweight outfits for summer. I love a maxi dress that’s versatile enough to be styled many different ways and this tropical print dress certainly fits the bill.

Starting Summer with a Colorful Maxi Dress | Where the Hell Have You Been, Local?
*taps mic* is this thing on? It’s been a minute since I’ve written a blog post and even longer since I’ve shared an outfit post. I’ve talked a bit about this over on Instagram Stories but there’s been a number of contributing factors to this unplanned break:
- a change in jobs
- a change in living situations
- overall burn out with social media, blogging, and influencing
- a dislike of clothing currently in stores

I tentatively am hoping to get back into the swing of things but my goodness it was an adventure setting up the tripod to shoot these photos. Let’s dive into the look!
Starting Summer with a Colorful Maxi Dress | Gucci Soho Small Leather Disco Bag
I’ve always been a fan of crossbody bags so that I can be hands free but especially during the summer months. Your hands may get sweaty or you might need the second hand to hold a water bottle while the other holds your phone. Around this time last year, I splurged and treated myself to the Gucci Soho Disco bag and it’s been the purse I’ve reached for time and time again since then.

The size is perfect; it can hold my iPhone, keys, a pack of gum, lip gloss, sunglasses, and even a Kindle or paperback book. I’ve taken the bag on a few trips too; while it’s large enough for more than just the essentials, it’s still small enough to toss into a tote bag or personal item if you’re flying. Overall a great everyday handbag that’s also available in black!
Starting Summer with a Colorful Maxi Dress | Flowy Maxi Dress for Warm Weather
Let’s talk about the dress, shall we? I’m wearing the small here and it’s a great fit so I’d say its true to size. The spaghetti straps of this colorful maxi dress are adjustable which is great for wearers of different heights. The back features a tie and covers the back of my strapless bra plus the dress has pockets. At the risk of being expelled from feminism — pockets on a dress are not a must have for me…I’m pear shaped and often feel like pockets exaggerate my bottom half. One thing I’m really liking about this dress’ silhouette is that the flowier skirt prevents this.

As I mentioned earlier, I’ve been struggling to find clothes I like for the better part of a year now. Fits are different, neutrals are big (as they always are), and I’ve struggled with feeling like clothes don’t fit right due to my body changing. For those reasons, I was pretty pumped when I saw J. Crew Factory’s latest new arrivals drop. While the completely shapeless silhouette is still having its (long drawn out) moment, I was thrilled to see more bold colors and some classic fit and flare fits.
Hope you enjoyed the long weekend!
