It’s hard to believe, but we are less than two weeks from the Kentucky Derby. Derby events are in full swing and this weekend I’m heading to opening night. I’ll be wearing orange since I’ll be attending the Awards for the Arts hosted by Fund for the Arts. Let’s get into how to wear orange for what promises to be a huge night for the city of Louisville.

Wearing Orange for Awards in the Arts | What is Awards in the Arts
Awards in the Arts takes place on opening night at Churchill Downs and celebrates horse racing and the arts with dancing and fashion. Orange is the color of creativity so Fund for the Arts and Churchill Downs encourage everyone to embrace orange in their outfits for opening night. This year, Fund for the Arts will be hosting the very first party on Churchill Downs’ new rooftop lounge!

Wearing Orange for Awards in the Arts | Finchy Baby Hats
Knowing I wanted to showcase some of the different ways to wear orange for this event, I reached out to Nicole at Finchy Baby Hats. Nicole found me on Instagram and after seeing her pieces {Y’ALL how amazing is this fascinator?!}, I knew I had to feature at least one of her pieces this Derby season. She’s still accepting custom orders but only for a couple more days so be sure to shoot her an email or reach out to her on Instagram.

Wearing Orange for Awards in the Arts | The Accessories
Lately, I’ve been wearing these toucan earrings from Work the Metal all. the. time. These statement earrings have so many different colors in them which have made them perfect for matching with different spring outfits. They’re made of sequins which keeps them lightweight too. I put on one of my favorite necklaces: the Elisa necklace from Kendra Scott!

One of my favorite recent purchases though is these Betsey Johnson heels. They’d been sitting in the clearance section at my local Gordmans, but I’d passed on them a few times. Finally during a recent trip, I decided the black block heels with pearls should come home with me. They’re incredibly comfortable and the pearls add a fun touch to a classic shoe.
Wearing Orange for Awards in the Arts | Other Orange Options for Opening Night
Ok so here’s the tea: it’s surprisingly hard to find an orange dress. I didn’t think this would be such a challenge, but it did take me longer than I expected to pick my outfit for Awards in the Arts. Who knew that wearing orange would be a challenge? Ultimately, I ended up going with this pink and orange dress that I found on sale, but I was surprised how tough it was to find a orange or coral dress. Especially with coral being one of the colors of the year, I thought I’d see this hue everywhere.

While I’m a big fan of all the lace options, my absolute favorite is this Eliza J maxi dress. The print is so pretty and the dress is perfect for summer weddings and to dress down with a jean jacket.
